Enable Record Histories in a Knack Database App

Hi there! Dave Parrish here, and today I want to share something crucial that I've recently encountered in my work with Knack app development. It’s a simple yet significant feature: enabling record histories. Let’s check it out.

Understanding Record Histories

Record histories are particularly beneficial for those of us on the Pro Plan or higher. They keep a detailed log of changes made within your app, such as when something was created, who made changes, and what exactly was altered. This history can be invaluable for troubleshooting issues that may arise.

Previously, record histories were automatically enabled. Now you have to manually enable this feature when you create a new app. This change underscores the importance of tracking these records, especially when you need to pinpoint the cause of a problem.

The Importance of Enabling Record Histories

Recently, I had a situation where a client on the Pro Plan was missing the record history icon. This was puzzling, so I started digging into the app settings. It turns out that the default setting for newly created apps doesn’t automatically enable record histories. This change seems to have been made to conserve storage space for those who may not utilize this feature.

If you’re not aware that this option exists, it can lead to missed opportunities for tracking vital information. To enable it, simply navigate to App Settings > Security and check the appropriate box.

A Real-World Example

In a recent project, I was working on an ERP application for an organization that hosts events like home shows and bridal expos. It’s a complex system that manages everything from sales to payments. When I was preparing for this video, I realized I hadn’t enabled record histories for this app. I went in and checked the box, but it’s important to note that this won’t retroactively save previous records—it will only start capturing data from the moment it’s enabled.

Final Thoughts

Make it a priority to check that record histories are enabled for all your apps. It’s a quick adjustment that can save you significant time and effort down the line, especially when troubleshooting. I’ve even gone through a few of my newer projects to ensure this feature is activated.

Thanks for reading! I hope you find this tip helpful as you continue your app development.
